'They can have their fantasies': Congress on TVK projecting TN CM Vijay as next PM
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Karti Chidambaram on Monday played down the buzz around TVK supporters projecting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay for a larger role in national politics, saying that becoming Prime Minister requires the backing of at least 272 MPs.Chidambaram was responding to Vijay’s participation in the 31st Meeting of the Southern Zonal Council, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.Speaking about the Tamil Nadu-based political party led by the actor-turned-politician, Chidambaram said its leadership could have national ambitions, but the numbers in Parliament would ultimately determine who could become Prime Minister.“To become Prime Minister of India, you need to command the support of 272 MPs, any formation or any political party which commands the support of 272 MPs and the leader of that formation will be Prime Minister of India. They are a political party which is centered around a very prominent movie star. So they can have their fantasies, dreams, ambitions, wishes for their leader,” Chidambaram said.Earlier, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president and MP Manickam Tagore criticised the ruling party, saying some Tamil Nadu ministers continued to operate in a “fan club mode” and that those with such a mindset could not be changed.
