He later established Kaptron Inc. and accumulated more than 100 patents during his distinguished career.Alongside science, he remained deeply committed to preserving Sikh history and culture. In 1967, he and his wife founded the Sikh Foundation, which went on to build one of the largest collections of Sikh art outside India.
The Nobel debate and a lasting legacy
When the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics recognised breakthroughs in fibre optic communication, the award went to Charles Kao for solving signal-loss problems in optical fibres. Kapany’s absence from the list sparked widespread debate among scientists, many of whom acknowledged that his earlier discoveries had laid the scientific foundation for the field.His contributions, however, have continued to receive global recognition. Fortune magazine named him one of the “Seven Unsung Heroes of the 20th Century” in 1999.
