Veteran actress Aruna Irani‘s earlier comments about her relationship with filmmaker Kuku Kohli have resurfaced following his death on August 25. The filmmaker and actress were married for around 36 years. Their relationship had attracted attention because Kuku Kohli was previously married. Aruna Irani had faced criticism after their relationship became known. She later spoke about the circumstances surrounding their marriage and addressed the accusations directed at her.
Aruna Irani spoke about ‘homebreaker’ tag
In an earlier conversation with the ANI podcast, Aruna Irani discussed the criticism she faced after being linked to Kuku Kohli. She particularly addressed being labelled a ‘homebreaker’. The actress said she believed responsibility for an extramarital relationship should not automatically be placed on the other woman. She argued that the husband involved also has accountability.She said, “Ye jo wives hoti hain, voh hamesha dusri aurat ko gaali deti hain (These wives always badmouth the other woman). See, I am not responsible for keeping you happy; your husband is responsible, hold him first. Tell him, ‘why did you do this?'”(“These wives always blame the other woman. I am not responsible for keeping you happy; your husband is responsible. Hold him accountable first. Ask him, ‘Why did you do this?’”)
‘I didn’t have an affair to break up a home’
Aruna Irani also rejected the suggestion that she had entered the relationship with the intention of destroying a family. She acknowledged that relationships can develop in complicated circumstances. She added, “Maine koi ghar todne ke liye nahi affair kiya (I didn’t have an affair to break up a home). But something happens; I don’t know what- only a man would know, or a woman would know, as to why a third person enters.” (“I did not have an affair with the intention of breaking up a home. But sometimes things happen; I don’t know why. Only a man or a woman involved would know why a third person enters the relationship.”)
Why Aruna Irani kept marriage private
Aruna Irani and Kuku Kohli reportedly met while working on a movie. Their professional association eventually developed into a romantic relationship. The couple chose to keep their marriage private for several years. Aruna Irani had previously explained that she did not feel confident discussing their relationship while Kuku Kohli’s first wife was alive. Their marriage became public after Rita Kohli passed away following health issues. Kuku Kohli had married Rita Kohli before his relationship with Aruna Irani.
Aruna Irani on not having children
Aruna Irani also spoke about her decision not to have children with Kuku Kohli. She explained that her circumstances influenced the choice. The actress was aware that raising a child in a relationship involving a married man could create difficult questions. She did not want a child to experience the complications she had faced. She shared, “I got married to…married man, I’m suffering…let the pain be with me only. But if my child asks, ‘Where’s papa?’ what do I say? If something happens to…child in…middle of…night, I can’t call him…that’s why I never wanted…child.”
Kuku Kohli’s family
Kuku Kohli married Aruna Irani in 1990. It was his second marriage. His first wife was Rita Kohli. Kuku Kohli and Rita Kohli had two daughters, Pooja Kohli and Karishma Kohli. Aruna Irani and Kuku Kohli did not have children together. Their marriage continued for more than three decades until Kuku Kohli’s death on August 25. Kuku Kohli’s last directorial film was the 2004 drama ‘Woh Tera Naam Tha’.
