Brahmcharini mata engages in penance or tapasya. Maa Brahmcharini is also known as devi Tapasvini and devi Yogni.

According to Hindu scriptures, Maa Parvati was born as the daughter of Himalaya and before her marriage to Lord Shiva, she performed a great penance. She survived on fruits and flowers for a thousands of years, then on herbs for a century, and ultimately on the broken leaves of the bilva Patra for a millennium.In the end, she even quit eating bilva leaves and started a strict penance that required her to go thousands of years without eating or drinking. She finally became extremely weak because of intense penance. The gods and goddesses were disturbed by this situation and Saptrishi’s gave her the blessing that all of her wishes would be fulfilled and that she would surely wed Lord Chandramouli Shiva. Goddess Parvati was given the name Aparna and Brahmcharini because of her strict penance.
