UN declares Nov 27 as day for elimination of child marriage | India News
NEW DELHI: In a significant development that brings the need to step up global action on Sustainable Development Goals 2030 into focus, UN has declared Nov 27 as International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.India, along with 65 countries, backed the resolution steered by Sierra Leone .Welcoming the resolution’s adoption at UN General Assembly in New York, women and child development (WCD) minister Annpurna Devi on X said, “This date holds special significance for India, as it was on Nov 27, 2024, that WCD ministry launched ‘Child Marriage Free India’ campaign.”India has seen a decline in underage marriage but the situation is still of concern, with the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) showing 20.1% of women aged 20-24 were married before the age of 18.
